The Centre for Engineering and Design Education was requested, by one of its Engineering Schools, to explore the ways in which Engineering Schools can bring about change to their learning and teaching culture. Although commissioned by one branch of engineering, the outputs of this study are likely to be relevant to other Engineering Schools. This document identifies different areas in which an Engineering School might wish to focus its efforts and makes suggestions for possible mechanisms to effect cultural change. Whilst the Appendices encapsulate a variety of focus areas and corresponding ideas, the main document highlights three in particular:

  • status and recognition
  • sharing effective practice
  • raising awareness and empowerment through targeted information

Some of the ideas presented within this document, could be enacted by CEDE on behalf of a School. Other ideas would need to be led by the School or supported by other Centres within the University.
