In April 2014, CEDE hosted a workshop run jointly with The Open University, with funding support from HEA STEM. The workshop was entitled “Enhancing the practical skills of engineering undergraduates - where can technology help?”. The format was very interactive with breakout discussions focusing on what practical work students do currently, what the Intended Learning Outcomes are, and to what extent technology could enhance the acquisition of practical skills. Examples of remote and virtual laboratory activities from the Wolfson Open Science Laboratory were shared by Open University presenters. Loughborough’s Richard Blanchard and Sheryl Williams described the highs and lows of a project to evolve a hands-on lab into a virtual experiment and finally into a remote laboratory. A panel discussion concluded the day’s event.
Delegates recognised that despite advances in technology, industry still needs graduates to have hands-on skills and experience, and to be confident when handling industry-scale equipment. Sources of funding for technology developments, and the advantages of working in collaboration to share development costs and resources between institutions were also highlighted.
